STEWARDSHIP AND GIVING

STEWARDSHIP  By: John Lohman – Church Council Support Chairperson

We are into the Stewardship Campaign with each Hope member family attending a scheduled cottage meeting.  Your attendance will provide you an opportunity to share your thoughts about God's gifts in time, talents and treasures.  Should your scheduled conflict with the assigned cottage meeting, you have an opportunity to attend a meeting immediately following each weekly service in October.  Please attend your scheduled cottage meeting or one of the meetings following the church service.

The concept of returning portions of God's gifts is stated throughout the Bible.  Our understanding of this practice in today's environment is no different than in biblical times.  We are responding to God in praise and thanksgiving as we regard our lives, our powers and possessions, our money and material wealth as gifts from God to be enjoyed and used in his service.  We are called to put our trust in God and live in companionship with Jesus Christ.  It's what we do as Christians.  A way of life.

Those of us who have struggled with our weight know well that it is not simply a case of going on a diet for the odd week or two, but a re-educating ourselves in our eating habits that will really transform our situation and bring about a permanent improvement in our health.  A similar program of re-education needs to be undertaken with regard to our Christian Stewardship.  It's not just generating the funds to "pay the bills", as a crash diet for a week or two but a way of life in response to God, a steady program of growth in Christian discipleship.

Stewardship is making a choice to live a Christ-centered life.  It means realizing that all we have and all that we are able to do are gifts from God, and that everything that we choose to do with those gifts is a sense, our gift back to God in gratitude.  This is the way we fulfill our baptismal promise to love and serve the Lord.  Stewardship is our way of responding to God's call with a life of gratitude.
