Evangelical Lutheran Worship Hymnal
The Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal bears the rich tradition of Christian worship practiced among Lutherans and, at the same time, seeks to renew that tradition in response to a generation of change in the church and in the world.
The ELW hymnal represents the gifts of the breadth of the church of Christ, and prizes the words and songs we hold in common with other Christians. At the same time, it treasures and extends the particular accents of our Lutheran inheritance as gifts to the whole church.
The ELW hymnal is the outcome of efforts toward the renewal of worship that have taken place over a decade and more. Extensive study and conversation led to statements on the practice of word and sacrament in both the ELC in Canada and the ELCA. {taken from the introduction pages 7 & 8 of the ELW hymnal}
